The short answer

Yes. Broccoli is non-toxic to cats, and some cats enjoy nibbling a steamed floret. Serve it plain and soft in small amounts. Large quantities can cause gas and loose stools. Raw stems are tough and a choking risk.

Why the verdict

Broccoli provides fibre and some vitamins but little a carnivore can use. It contains isothiocyanates, which can irritate the gut in large amounts; small nibbles are harmless. Seasonings such as garlic, butter and cheese sauce are the main danger.

How to prepare it

  • Steam until soft.
  • Plain: no garlic, butter, oil or cheese sauce.
  • Small florets, chopped.
  • Avoid tough raw stems.
Kittens: A soft nibble is fine.

Signs of trouble

  • Gas
  • Loose stool
  • Vomiting (large amounts)
When to call the vet: If vomiting or diarrhoea lasts more than 24 hours, or your cat is lethargic, stops eating or seems in pain. ASPCA Poison Control: (888) 426-4435.
