Vets score cats from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (obese); 5 is ideal. Each point above 5 is roughly 10% extra body weight.

  • 1 · Emaciated: Ribs, spine and hips visible from a distance; no fat.
  • 3 · Thin: Ribs easily felt with minimal fat; obvious waist.
  • 5 · Ideal: Ribs felt under a light fat layer; waist visible behind ribs; small belly pad.
  • 7 · Overweight: Ribs hard to feel; waist barely visible; rounded belly.
  • 9 · Obese: Ribs can’t be felt; heavy fat over spine, face and limbs; no waist.
Sudden change? Unexplained weight loss or gain of more than 10% warrants a vet visit — it can signal thyroid, kidney, dental or diabetic issues.

Frequently asked

How much should a cat weigh?

Most domestic shorthair adults weigh 3.6–4.5 kg (8–10 lb). Large breeds like Maine Coons can healthily weigh much more — body condition matters more than the number.

How much should a kitten weigh?

A rough rule is about 0.45 kg (1 lb) per month of age up to about 5–6 months. Newborns weigh around 100 g and should roughly double that in the first week.

How do I know if my cat is overweight?

Run your hands along the ribs: you should feel them easily under a thin layer of fat, and see a waist from above. That’s a body condition score of 5/9.
