Safe

Plain cooked rice is gentle and non-toxic, but it's filler rather than nutrition.

Portion: 1–2 teaspoons, occasionally.

The short answer

Yes. Plain, well-cooked white or brown rice is safe for cats, and a small amount mixed with plain chicken is sometimes suggested by vets for short-term tummy upsets. It doesn't give a carnivore much nutrition, though, so it shouldn't replace cat food. Never feed raw rice, fried rice or rice cooked with onion, garlic or stock.

Why the verdict

Cooked starch is digestible for cats in small amounts, and bland rice can help firm stools. Cats have limited need for carbohydrate, so regular rice mainly adds calories. Raw rice is hard to digest, and seasoned rice dishes often contain alliums and salt.

How to prepare it

  • Cook thoroughly in plain water.
  • No salt, butter, soy sauce, stock, onion or garlic.
  • Serve cooled, a spoonful at most.
  • Only use a bland diet if your vet has recommended it.
Kittens: Not needed in a kitten's diet.

Signs of trouble

  • Constipation (large amounts)
  • Vomiting (seasoned or fried rice)
When to call the vet: If vomiting or diarrhoea lasts more than 24 hours, or your cat is lethargic, stops eating or seems in pain. ASPCA Poison Control: (888) 426-4435.
